UAE Family Court Fees Guide
Private family-law enquiry
Request a Consultation
Tell us briefly about your family-law matter and how we may contact you. Your details are handled under the Privacy Policy. Sending this form does not create a lawyer–client relationship.
Please do not upload passports, Emirates IDs, children’s identity documents, intimate evidence, complete financial records or original documents. If a document is needed to understand your enquiry, attach one only, and send anything further through a secure route agreed with the office.
UAE family court fees cannot be reduced to one universal divorce price. The amount and timing depend on the competent judicial authority, the legal route, the claims filed, any monetary value, service requirements, applications during the case, appeal and enforcement. Translation, attestation, expert deposits and lawyer’s professional fees are separate from the court filing fee.
Use this guide to create a list of fee items to confirm for Dubai Courts, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department or a federal court. It does not calculate a guaranteed total. Always verify the result against the current official service card or registration screen immediately before filing because legislation, schedules, services and payment arrangements can change.
Send the fee-planning summary through the inquiry form for review by the family-law team. State the court, claim, stage and any upcoming deadline. For WhatsApp intake, contact +971 50 627 5196.
Building your own UAE family-court fee plan
Work through the questions below and write your own answers down. What you should end up with is a list of fee categories to verify, the official link for each, and the date you checked it — not a single predicted total. No total assembled this way has been approved by any court, and this page does not calculate one.
Choose the judicial authority
Select Dubai Courts, Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, UAE federal courts or authority not yet confirmed. Each has its own official portal and applicable fee framework. Do not apply a federal fee table automatically to a Dubai Courts filing or treat an Abu Dhabi service card as a Dubai quotation.
If the court is uncertain, the Family Law Route Finder will organise the questions that bear on it in your own browser. It does not assess jurisdiction, and the answer still has to be confirmed by a qualified UAE lawyer against the current rules of the competent authority. The court and the governing family law are related but not identical questions.
Choose the family-law route
Select Muslim personal status, federal civil personal status for eligible non-Muslims, Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court or route not confirmed. A civil no-fault application, a Muslim personal-status claim and a post-divorce financial application can be registered differently even when each is described broadly as a family case.
Choose the procedural stage
Select family guidance or reconciliation, first-instance filing, interim or urgent request, service or notification, expert stage, appeal, cassation where available, or execution. A person who has already obtained judgment should not use the original filing fee as the full estimate for enforcement.
Add claim and service details
Identify divorce status, dowry, spousal maintenance, child maintenance, custody, guardianship, contact, travel, protection, financial relief, foreign judgment or enforcement. Add any monetary value only where the official fee rule requests it. State whether the other party is inside or outside the UAE and whether translations, attestations, experts, copies or certificates may be needed.
What an accurate family-court fee estimate must separate
A sensible budget distinguishes court charges from external and professional costs. Combining every item under “legal fees” makes it difficult to see which payment is set by an authority and which is a third-party or agreed professional charge.
Filing and registration fees
This is the charge associated with opening a particular request, case or application. It may be a fixed amount, value-based amount, schedule item, service-card amount or exempt category. Multiple claims or later applications may attract separate entries. The registration screen may show the amount only after the case type and claims have been entered.
Judicial notification and service charges
Notification is not necessarily included in the headline filing amount. Service method, number of parties, addresses, attempts and service outside the UAE can affect costs and time. At federal level, Cabinet Resolution No. 115 of 2022 regulates fees for judicial notification services. Local court systems may have their own current service arrangements.
Translation, certification and attestation
Court proceedings and evidence may require certified Arabic translation. Foreign public documents may also require legalisation or attestation. Translator, notary, courier and attestation charges are not the same as a court fee. Translate only the complete relevant material after checking the intended filing, rather than paying to translate an entire archive prematurely.
Expert deposits and technical work
If the court appoints an expert, an initial deposit or other expert-related amount may be ordered. The amount depends on the assignment and court direction. Company accounts, valuation, handwriting or other technical issues can add cost and time. An expert deposit is not proof that the party paying it will ultimately bear every cost.
Appeals, cassation deposits and securities
Appeal or cassation may involve a filing fee, deposit or security under the applicable law and service. Do not infer the amount or deadline from the first-instance case. The decision type, court level, claims and current fee schedule matter. A cost discussion should never cause a party to miss an appeal deadline.
Execution and enforcement charges
Enforcing maintenance, a financial award, a settlement or another order is a distinct procedural stage. Registration, notification, inquiries, attachment, sale, payment handling or other execution steps may attract separate charges. Budget from the operative judgment and the enforcement action actually required.
Copies, certificates and administrative services
Certified judgments, proof of finality, case copies, search certificates, translations and other administrative services can create smaller but important costs. They may be necessary for appeal, enforcement, immigration, civil-status registration or foreign recognition.
Lawyer’s professional fees
Professional fees are separate from court, expert, translation, attestation and notification charges. Scope should be agreed clearly: advice only, drafting, filing, hearings, appeal, execution or cross-border coordination. The court’s cost decision should not be assumed to reimburse all agreed professional fees.
Dubai family court fees: use the family-case rule, not a generic civil percentage
Dubai Law No. 21 of 2015 regulates judicial fees of the Dubai Courts, as amended, and contains schedules and rules for different proceedings. A frequently repeated statement that a Dubai civil lawsuit carries a percentage-based fee must not be applied mechanically to a family lawsuit. Article 14’s general civil-lawsuit percentage expressly excludes family lawsuits, so the particular family claim, schedule, amendment and current Dubai Courts service must be checked.
That distinction matters. A divorce-status application may differ from a monetary family claim, interim request, appeal or execution. Adding custody, maintenance, dowry or another request can affect the registration structure. Dubai legislation and the current Dubai Courts portal are the appropriate primary sources; an old blog table or another person’s receipt is not a reliable quote.
When using the fee guide for Dubai, record the exact service selected, every claim, the amount shown by the current court system and the date. Keep the payment receipt. If the system classifies the matter differently from the intended claim, do not pay merely to move forward; verify the registration.
Read family-law services in Dubai and the UAE divorce guide for the substantive route before estimating costs.
Abu Dhabi family court fees: confirm the case and any exemption
The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department states in its official frequently asked questions that judicial fees vary according to the case and claim and are governed by the applicable Abu Dhabi judicial-fee law. Its registration process displays the prescribed fees. The same official guidance notes exemptions for certain categories, including specified alimony, family, family-guidance and reconciliation matters.
An exemption should not be assumed from the everyday label given to the dispute. The exact case type and relief control. A post-divorce financial application in the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court may not be treated in the same way as a family-guidance file, and an ancillary application or appeal may have its own charge.
Use the current ADJD service or case-registration screen and retain the calculation. The Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court guide explains why eligibility and route should be confirmed before selecting a form. For location-specific help, see family lawyer services in Abu Dhabi.
Federal court fees: check the schedule and current service card
Federal Law No. 13 of 2016 on Judicial Fees before the Federal Courts, as amended, provides the federal framework and attached fee schedule. The law also permits the Cabinet to amend the schedule. That is why a saved table should not be treated as permanent.
Use the UAE Legislation page for the current consolidated law and schedule, then check the Ministry of Justice service card for the precise request. An official service card can state the required documents, service steps and current fee for that service. It is still necessary to confirm that the selected service matches the intended family claim.
Federal notification charges must also be considered. Cabinet Resolution No. 115 of 2022 addresses fees for judicial notification services. Foreign service may involve additional official, translation, courier or destination-country steps. Review UAE federal personal-status courts before using a federal service for a matter belonging to another authority.
Fee exemptions, postponement and inability to pay
Some laws or services exempt particular claims or parties; another process may allow an application concerning payment where the legal conditions are met. These are legal provisions, not discretionary discounts. Eligibility, evidence and procedure must be confirmed with the competent authority.
Do not omit a required fee without an accepted exemption or order. Equally, do not pay a charge that the official system has correctly marked exempt merely because an unofficial estimate included it. If finances are limited, raise the issue early and gather supporting income, liability and household documents. A court or authority decides the application; Mr AlBalooshi cannot promise approval.
Fee planning for common family matters
Divorce without financial or child claims
Confirm whether family guidance or another preliminary process is required, the divorce registration item, notification, translation of the marriage record, certified judgment and any finality certificate. A simple legal issue can still involve foreign service or document attestation.
Divorce with maintenance or dowry
List the divorce request and every monetary or ancillary claim separately. Identify whether the current fee rule uses a fixed item, claim value, schedule or exemption. Add translation, notification, expert and execution items only where they may apply.
Child custody, guardianship and contact
Confirm how the court registers each child-related request and whether an existing case can be used. Add urgent travel or passport applications separately. Do not assume that child-related relief has the same fee treatment in every route.
Civil no-fault divorce
First determine whether the case falls under the federal civil-personal-status regime or the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court. Then use the competent authority’s current form and fee source. No-fault status does not mean every financial or child application is included without another charge.
Appeal or cassation
Obtain the complete judgment and notification record. Confirm the correct level of challenge, deadline, filing fee, deposit or security and notification cost. Do not wait for a cost quote before preserving a deadline.
Judgment enforcement
Prepare the enforceable title, proof of finality where needed and a precise arrears or obligation schedule. Then identify registration, notice and the specific execution measures likely to be requested. Read the family judgment enforcement guide.
Costs that commonly cause a budget to change
An estimate can rise when service requires repeated attempts or overseas transmission; the court orders an expert; voluminous evidence requires Arabic translation; new interim applications are made; the judgment is appealed; or enforcement requires asset searches and attachment steps. It can fall when a claim is exempt, settlement narrows the issues or a document is already available in an acceptable form.
Budgeting should therefore use three columns: required now, possible later and external or professional. Add a source and date to every official amount. Do not represent a future or discretionary charge as already payable.
How to verify a fee before payment
Use this five-point check:
- Confirm the competent judicial authority and legal route.
- Select the exact official service, case or application.
- Enter every claim and relevant value accurately.
- Review exemptions, notification, translation, expert, appeal and execution items.
- Save the official calculation or screenshot, source URL, date and receipt.
If a public service card and the registration screen differ, pause and ask the authority or obtain legal advice. The live registration classification may reveal a different service or updated amount. Never send court-fee money to an unverified personal account.
Use the inquiry form for a fee-planning review
In the form, enter your name, mobile number, email and a short message stating the court, matter, stage and next date. You may upload the current service calculation, court notice or judgment. Do not upload an entire financial archive for a preliminary fee question.
Mr AlBalooshi can review whether the plan distinguishes court, notification, translation, expert, appeal, execution and professional items. Conflict checks and formal engagement are required before individual advice or representation. For WhatsApp intake, contact +971 50 627 5196.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a divorce case cost in the UAE?
There is no single UAE-wide amount. The competent court, route, claims, service, translations, applications, appeal and enforcement determine the payable items.
Are Dubai family court fees always six per cent of the claim?
No. Dubai’s general civil-lawsuit percentage in Article 14 of Law No. 21 of 2015 expressly excludes family lawsuits. The specific family fee rule and current service must be checked.
Are Abu Dhabi family cases exempt from fees?
Some categories may be exempt under the applicable Abu Dhabi rules, but not every matter described as a family case is automatically free. Confirm the exact claim during registration.
Where can federal court fees be checked?
Use the current federal Judicial Fees Law and schedule on UAE Legislation, then verify the exact Ministry of Justice service card or registration screen.
Is judicial notification included in the filing fee?
Do not assume it is. Notification method, attempts, parties and foreign service can create separate official or external charges.
Are lawyer’s fees the same as court fees?
No. Professional fees are agreed separately. Court, translation, attestation, expert, notification and enforcement charges should be itemised apart from them.
Will the losing party reimburse all my legal costs?
Do not assume full reimbursement. Any cost order depends on the applicable law and judgment and may not equal the professional fees actually agreed.
Is there a separate fee for an urgent family application?
There may be a separate registration or application item. The remedy and competent authority must be identified before checking the current charge.
Do certified Arabic translations form part of the court fee?
Usually they are external translation costs, not the filing fee. The number and type of documents required determine the amount.
Who pays a court-appointed expert deposit?
The court may direct a party to deposit an amount initially. That procedural direction does not necessarily decide ultimate responsibility for all costs.
Does a no-fault divorce fee include financial and child orders?
Not necessarily. Status, post-divorce finances and child applications may be registered or charged separately under the competent route.
Are appeal fees the same as first-instance fees?
No assumption should be made. The court level, decision, claims, deposit or security and current schedule must be verified promptly.
Are there fees after a family judgment is issued?
Yes, potentially. Certified copies, finality documents, notification and execution measures may create additional charges.
Can this guide guarantee the total amount payable?
No. It identifies categories and official sources. Only the current competent authority can determine the amount for the registered request.
Does sending a fee summary appoint anyone to act for you?
No. The form supports preliminary intake. Conflict checks, identity and scope confirmation and formal engagement are required before advice or representation.
